NOTES Magazine is interested in short fiction, personal essays, and poetry as well as submissions for our public column, The Accidental Anthropologist.
Every issue of Notes features a Spotlight Author from whom we publish a showcase of fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction. Ideal candidates for this opportunity should write in various forms and bring something new to the table in terms of style, voice, and subject. See below for instructions on applying to be considered for this special honor.

Misc. Info:
Payments
Notes: Payments for future issues will be an honorarium based on available funds until we are more established and can pay a flat amount upon first acceptance. The Honorarium Fund is comprised of donations, reading fees from certain projects, a portion of revenues earned through our critique services, subscriptions, book sales, merchandise sales, and advertising revenue. The Honorarium is divided by percentage among contributor categories as follows:
Spotlight Author: 20%
(This is the highest honor. Therefore the Spotlight Author received the largest percentage of the total Honorarium.)
Columns: 25% (Divided among all columnists for the issue.)
Fiction: 20%
Nonfiction: 20%
Poetry: 15%
The dollar amount for each contributor category is then distributed evenly among contributors in each. Payment may vary greatly from issue to issue, dependent on revenue. All contributors will always receive a free contributor copy as well.

Grace Notes Books: We offer authors a standard contract with a 15% royalty (sometimes more, sometimes less, depending on the project). We do not offer an advance against royalties accept through our Discovering the Undiscovered competition winners.

Editorial Policies:
Grace Notes Publishing prides itself on helping promising authors reach their greatest heights. With that mission in mind, we do not offer publishing opportunities only to those pieces in pristine condition but also to those who (with proper guidance) show potential of crossing into greatness.
Our editors may send out revision notes to potential contributors to assist in the editing process and to work a piece into publish-ready condition. We would rather work with a great writer to produce a perfect story than publish lesser works that are more "technically" polished. However, we place high value on maintaining voice & style and our editors will never ask an author to make changes they are uncomfortable with, will never revise a submission on the author's behalf (we edit for grammatical issues and language economy), and are open to discussion pertaining to revision. Ultimately, at Grace Notes, the author is always in control of their work.
Potential contributors retain all rights and may decline the revision suggestions made by our editors. However, this may hurt an author's chances of being published in NOTES Magazine, depending on how crucial the suggested re-writes are in terms of keeping up with our high standards to produce a magazine unlike any other. Authors receiving revision notes from our editors will also be informed of the importance we are placing on their revisions.
Contract:
By submitting to Notes Magazine you are accepting that you have read and understand our guidelines and policies regarding publication.
$29.99
Authors may submit the 1st 10,000 words of a novel/memoir or the equivalent length in short stories and/or essays for editorial critique and feedback services. We will also read up to 15 pages of poetry.
This service includes specific comment notes (from a Grace Notes Editor) throughout the manuscript on language/word use, descriptive strength or weakness, characterization, plot, etc. In addition, we provide authors with a one-page summary of what we feel is working in the materials and what we feel could use strengthening.

After receiving our feedback and editorial notes, authors can submit their revised piece for publication consideration and will receive high priority consideration.

Submitting authors need not apply for feedback in order to submit to Notes Magazine or Grace Notes Books. This is an additional service we offer to help writers polish their work into publishable condition so they can submit to any literary magazine or book publisher and have a stronger chance of placing their work.
Reading fees for this service are kept low and considered a donation toward the Grace Notes Foundation's many projects supporting creative writers including honorariums awarded at our writing community, NotesAndGraceNotes.com, and the upcoming GraceWorks Project which will offer mentoring programs for young writers and fellowships awarded to outstanding new writers as well as workshops, literary groups forming nationwide, and other benefits.

Please Note: We are currently hosting our 3rd Annual Discovering the Undiscovered Competitions. These contests do offer a feedback option and while the critique would not be as thorough as this critique service, it may be worth considering entering the competition rather than paying for this service. Early entrants for the competition will receive their critique in a timely manner and have the opportunity to submit a revised draft. Please see the contest rules and guidelines at gracenotesbooks.com.

NOTES does not have genre restrictions but we do have very specific desires in terms of style. We publish stories that celebrate a blending of the best qualities from both ‘literary' and 'mainstream' stylings.
We don't want to read a story that leaves us thinking, "That was beautifully written... but what was the point?" Entertainment qualities should be combined with the thoughtful prose and unique language often found in the "literary" genre.
NOTES celebrates balance in the works we publish. This is our only true criteria aside from asking that your submission be in professional condition, free of typos and grammatical errors (for the most part at least) and in a legible 12 pt. font. Makes life easier on our editors!
We do prefer pieces under 3000 words for layout purposes but will work with longer stories of exceptional quality. Response should take from 1 month to 3 months depending on the number of submissions we are currently considering. However, we have no issue with simultaneous submissions and ask only that authors notify us if another publisher picks up the story.

Personal essays should impart a true story, written in a similar styling to (1st person) fiction. A winning piece of CNF @ Notes will include descriptions, dialogue, and characters. However, we like to see CNF that feels very intimate, that we come away from feeling as if we know the author personally.
Humor, poignancy, and thought provoking materials are always welcome.

Please send no more than three poems at a time and do not submit again until you have heard back from us on your initial submission. We would love to see your poetry if-- and ONLY if-- your work does NOT:
1. Contain the phrase "My Soul" or "Your Soul" or the word "soul" in any way, shape, or form-- especially in the title. We're also not real big on the words (or words in the realm of) enlightenment, spirit, or spirituality. It's not that we have an issue with spiritual poetry in particular but we find these words are often the product of passionate poets who might not have learned to mine their minds for unique perspectives and subtle themes. Also, "heart" or "my heart" might not earn you any points here unless you've managed a minor miracle. We find that poems that contain these words/phrases tend to me more exclusively introspective than the type of poetry we're interested in and are usually (although not always) an immediate indicator of poor expression.
2. Does not contain centering, bolds, underlines, a variety of fonts, an exclamation point, or an unusual amount of italics.
3. Does not use a single word, phrase, or sentence repeated over and over. For instance: IamGodandGodisme. I am God and God is me. I. Am. God. And. God. Is.Me...(repeat, rinse, repeat to amount to 500 words.)
Yes, we've seen this as an actual example-- and, no, we don't think it's amazingly creative. Sorry.

We are open to reviews of books and films.
Books: Any book is acceptable for review as long as it is not currently and hasn't recently been on the Best Sellers List. Our goal is to introduce readers to books they have probably not read and may not have heard of. We also prefer positive reviews, recommendations, as opposed to negative "you don't want to read this" reviews.

Film: As with our book reviews, film reviews should focus on lesser known films. These need not be brand new movies, currently in theaters. And, as with book reviews, we'd rather point readers toward a great film they haven't seen than warn them against a bad film. Film reviews should discuss all aspects of the film (acting, direction, etc) but with a special emphasis on story and characters.

The Spotlight Author is a regular feature found in every issue of Notes Magazine. Between 10 and 15 pages are devoted to this special honor, including: An extended bio and Q7A interview with the featured author, along with (up to 4) short stories and/or essays (preferable 1-2 of each) and six poems. To apply for this feature, you must submit multiple sample works in at lease 2 of the 3 categories below:
Poetry (provide 4-8 poems in your submission)
Short Fiction (provide 2-3 short stories or stand-alone excerpts in your submission)
Creative essay/nonfiction (provide 2-3 essays in your submission)

An ideal candidate should submit excellent works in all three categories though we will consider, and have chosen previous Spotlight Authors, writing in only 2 of the 3.
Publishing history has no affect on a candidates potential to become our next featured author. We look for exceptional authors using unique styles effectively, writing lively works that balance literary artistry and entertainment value. At least half of all our Spotlight Authors to date have been newer writers and had little- if any- publishing history. We do ask that Spotlight applicants provide a brief bio and relevant publishing credits or other accomplishments but this is not taken into consideration as part of your application. If chosen for this honor, this information will be used to create your interview questions and our article discussing your works. In the case of an unpublished author being chosen for this feature, our article and interview will focus more on your style and talent than your background.

Because these applications take more time and man/woman-power to process, we ask that you make a small donation ($3.50) when applying for this honor. Editors participating in reading for the Spotlight Author Feature donate the processing fee to our Author Honorarium Fund, helping to boost payments for those published in Notes.
Authors who truly cannot afford to make this donation, should email Notes@GraceNotesBooks.com with a subject heading "Spotlight Application" and include the required information in the body of the email. We will specifically request the attachment files and ask that you not attach them to the initial email as this may cause the application to be sent to our spam folder & lost forever.

GN Books will be publishing this anthology at the end of 2011 or beginning of 2012 and inspirational Poetry/Short Prose submissions for this project must be received by September 9th.

The main purpose of this anthology is to present personal essays from women or men on the subject of rape; the psychological, spiritual, and emotional elements of being victimized and healing. This anthology is meant to shed light on a "taboo" subject, to provide reader's with a sense of communal experience, and hope for recovery.

We are seeking poetry and flash prose pieces that highlight the healing aspects of what this anthology seeks to achieve, to maintain a sense of hope within these important pages. We do not seek religious poetry or prose pieces unless they are written in a very universal sense. Submissions should emphasize a sense of hope & healing, acceptance of self and giving the self permission to love
These materials need not address the subject of rape or sexual crimes and, in fact, we would prefer that these pieces did not. They will be printed between essays on the subject and will re-enforce the positive message of the anthology without detracting from the harsh reality of those stories.
These pieces are as essential to this anthology as the true stories our courageous contributors have written on such a difficult and painful subject. The hopeful, healing properties of the poetry and short prose pieces are intended to act as a soothing light in a dark place. The personal essays on rape give the reader the comfort of knowing they are not alone, the benefit of communal experiences, but the inspirational materials are the salve that brings healing to the forefront.

ALL PROCEEDS FROM THIS PROJECT WILL BE DONATED TO ORGANIZATIONS PROVIDING SUPPORT TO VICTIMS.
There is no reading fee for this project but we do ask that you make a small donation- even $1 or $2 will help, whatever you can afford to contribute to such a worthy cause- to help launch this tremendously important book. The more support we have, personal or financial, the more successful the book will be and these are stories that need to be shared on a topic that needs to come out into the light of day.
